20,000 Voices promotes, supports and develops singing across Northumberland and the Northeast

Our aims are to:

  • Promote access to singing
  • Identify and respond to singing needs
  • Act as a catalyst for the development of singing in the region
  • Encourage and facilitate the development of singing skills and enjoyment
  • Promote the benefits of singing
Set up in 1993 by the Mid Northumberland Arts group (MidNAG), the name 20,000 Voices was also a target - to reach out to 20,000 voices in 3 years. After only two years the target was exceeded. When we became independent in March 1998, the number of voices stood at 44,500… we're still counting and currently our total is over 107,500. We celebrated reaching our 100,000th voice in November 2006 - see our news section for more about this event.

Projects have ranged from...
Song workshops, education programmes and concerts for pre-school children to work with older people in Age Concern centres and our Silver Northumberland programme. 
From workshops for advanced singers to courses for those who say they can't sing - how we proved them wrong!
Folk songs, classical music, jazz, gospel, barbershop, musicals, we've improvised and composed….and always had lots of fun!

Singers
People who sing with us come from all over the region, are different ages, have different interests and abilities - but all love singing. Many people attend workshops about music they love, but many also attend workshops introducing them to new styles of music. Singers attend for all sorts of reasons - to improve their skills and knowledge, for relaxation, for fun, for excitement, because a friend brings them (these singers often return for more!) - but mostly because they want to sing. Many also sing with choirs.

Smitten By Song
